Will Americans remember that vigilance and sustained engagement in the world are necessary to prevent distant threats from reaching our shores? Or will an increasingly influential combination of voices on the socialist left and isolationist right persuade Americans that retreat or even blaming America itself is the lesson for America to learn.
Twenty-five years after 9/11, that debate will determine how America confronts the threats of the next generation.
